Our History

decade-of-prevention

As a registered kinesiotherapist, Jon Kabance spent years working one-on-one with patients in a clinical setting. Instead of being limited to treating patients who had already been injured, he saw an opportunity to apply his expertise in physiology, anatomy, and biomechanics outside of the traditional context of the clinic. It was an opportunity to share this information with people proactively, to prevent injuries in the very place they are most likely to occur: at work. He started by partnering with Ron Schakowsky, a business consultant with two decades of experience helping companies maximize their potential and profitability. Together, they began developing a programmatic approach to address the debilitating impact of occupational injuries on businesses and the hard-working individuals they depend on.

” By systematically mitigating risk through engineering, ergonomics, and exercise, we continue to bring clients an average 6-to-1 return on investment. “

History

In 2004, BIOKINETIX was founded with the express purpose of reversing the traditionally reactive approach to occupational healthcare. By looking to the latest advances in sports medicine, we have introduced a uniquely proactive approach focused on helping workers prepare their bodies for the physical demands of their jobs and mitigating at-risk behaviors.

Reactivity vs. Proactivity

Our proactive approach focuses on mitigating the causes of occupational injuries to prevent them from occurring in the first place; the more common alternative is with reactive measures such as rehabilitation that address only the treatment of injuries after the damage has already been done. Although the cost of an injury can be measured in part by worker’s compensation and other direct expenses, the human impact is often underestimated. A single slip, fall, or repetitive stress injury may stand as an obstacle to well-being long after returning to work. Not only do workplace injuries threaten productivity and increase absenteeism, they also place a burden on employees’ quality of life by inhibiting their physical well-being. Spending time with family, traveling, recreational sports, or simple household tasks often become more difficult—or even painful—in the aftermath of a musculoskeletal injury. That lost time, or downtime, is the indirect cost suffered by hundreds of thousands of injured workers.

As a national thought leader in injury prevention, BIOKINETIX strives to help these individuals gain more uptime and live life to the fullest, even beyond retirement. That’s the purpose behind The Science of More UpTime: to prevent both the financial and human consequences of workplace injuries.

A Sports Medicine approach

Occupational Injury prevention Sports MedicineIn the field of sports medicine, prevention is identified as the most powerful strategy to address musculoskeletal disorders—the leading cause of workplace injuries. By implementing sports medicine, medical ergonomics, and exercise-based programs in an occupational setting, we effectively mitigate risk at the source. Our approach to healthcare is non-patient-based, eliminating any conflict of interest with our clients towards the necessary objective of injury prevention.

Every injury, regardless of severity, hinders company growth and success. It’s about more than just keeping track of how many days have gone by without an injury. We believe that building relationships with employees is the key to sustaining a culture of safety. Our programs engage employees in a group setting, but also provide opportunities for one-on-one attention from medical professionals. Program leaders encourage employees through daily exercise with proprietary resistance tools, and facilitate positive behavioral changes by delivering researched-based, interactive education. Instead of expecting employees to participate on their own time, BIOKINETIX brings wellness to employees directly with on-site programs that are framed within the work day and designed to prepare them for specific job demands.

Understanding why many programs fail

Every year, thousands of organizations invest in health and wellness programs that ultimately fail to bring results. What makes BIOKINETIX stand out from the rest? Our programs are supported by a cohesive, comprehensive strategy. Without the right strategy, it’s easy to mistake superficial engagement for real progress; many programs gain participation only from employees who are already moderately healthy, while failing to engage high-risk individuals.

These programs also do not address the underlying causes of excessive healthcare spending such as at-risk behavior or chronic disease, an oversight that further contributes to large claims and reoccurring medical costs. BIOKINETIX identifies and evaluates these risk factors from the very beginning. By systematically mitigating risk through engineering, ergonomics, and exercise, we continue to bring clients an average 6-to-1 return on investment.

Developing a methodology based on sustainability

BIOKINETIX programs are designed to stand the test of time. We developed TASC Methodology to build our programs on a foundation for long-term success and ensure sustainability for years to come. Every business has a unique workplace culture, and our programs are tailored to meet existing company needs. These programs can be customized to coordinate with existing safety programs, and are implemented by securing organizational support and management commitment. By measuring results and performance, we track and report program success in real time.

BIOKINETIX creates a long-lasting culture of prevention

Our innovative approach to occupational healthcare has brought businesses extraordinary results: increased profitability, improved job task performance, lower rates of injury, and valuable employee uptime. BIOKINETIX continues to bring these benefits to a diverse array of organizations, both large and small. Since 2004, BIOKINETIX has successfully developed and implemented injury prevention programs across a vast array of industries, including food processing, utilities, manufacturing and transportation.

We believe that investing in employee well-being is critical to company success and organizational performance. Together, our proactive approach and targeted strategy give businesses a path to overcome challenges and create a culture of safety and awareness. With prevention at the forefront, BIOKINETIX remains unwaveringly committed to achieving a higher quality of life for today’s workforce.
