The WOW

The WOW® is a handheld flywheel device for soft tissue injury prevention that uses rhythmic resistance to increase total body circulation, warm tissues through their full range of motion, and optimize synovial fluid production to protect muscles, ligaments, and joints.

Developed by a U.S. veteran, the WOW is utilized nationwide to prevent soft-tissue injuries, with current applications including the NBA, NFL, collegiate athletics, and the occupational and performing arts settings.

How it works

The WOW® uses rhythmic resistance to create active muscle contractions. It is used by grasping one handle in each hand and pulling them away from each other (pulling the rope taut), bringing the handles toward the center (slackening the rope), and repeating this process for several minutes for soft tissue injury prevention.

The ropes twist as the device is “spun” clockwise or counterclockwise. As the user pulls the handles apart, the rope becomes untwisted, causing inertia in the disc. Bringing the handles together re-twists the device in the opposite direction. Together, these movements lengthen and shorten the rope to create rhythmic resistance.

The WOW is specifically designed for use within the area from shoulders to knees, approximately 3 feet in front of the body, and within the full range of motion. Using the WOW puts the body in an optimized position within this zone, which limits the risk of overexertion and helps with soft tissue injury prevention.

60” WOW®

$60

The 60” WOW from BIOKINETIX is designed with a single handle and a clip on the opposite end that can be anchored to a solid structure and used to perform a unilateral upper body warm-up with great efficiency.

This device allows users to exercise muscles through their full range of motion while incorporating sport or task-specific movements with a higher degree of precision.

WOW® Ring

$5

Snap the WOW Ring onto the plastic center disc of the WOW for added strength and conditioning benefits. By adding weight to the disc, the WOW Ring helps create a more forceful muscular contraction during your warm-up for soft tissue injury prevention.

Maximizes Muscle Contractions

The disc in the center of the WOW is inertia-based and stores rotational energy. Accelerating and decelerating the disc uses this energy to create equal resistance in both directions, achieving a significantly higher volume of muscle contractions than any other handheld device. Pulling apart and releasing the handles towards the center activates two types of muscle contractions that work on both sides of each joint. Achieving this full range of motion increases blood circulation. Better circulation means that oxygen and nutrients are brought more quickly to the muscles and other areas of the body for soft tissue injury prevention.

These nutrients convert into energy, and the muscles use them to produce movement, repair, and regenerate. By increasing the volume and rate of muscle contractions, the WOW transitions the body from a relaxed state to readiness in minutes.

Creates Muscle Memory

Our muscles respond well to movement patterns. We can teach them to move in proper patterns, a concept more commonly known as muscle memory.

Warming up with the WOW builds muscle memory. It also serves as a corrective exercise to undo “bad” patterns such as repetitive stress or compensatory problems and leads to soft tissue injury prevention.

This action helps create and maintain muscular symmetry by engaging the larger and smaller opposing muscle groups while utilizing a full range of motion.

Created and manufactured by U.S. veterans

Vietnam veteran Gary V. Werner created the original prototype for the WOW. He used plexiglass from a downed helicopter, boot laces, and broom handles to fashion a unique workout device reminiscent of the simple “whirligig” toy from his childhood.

He found this device to be useful not only in relieving upper body stress but also in mitigating fatigue experienced in the line of duty and helping with soft tissue injury prevention.

Today, each piece of the WOW is assembled by U.S. veterans and manufactured in veteran-owned or operated facilities.
